Design a Cake for Another Couple Date Night

Last summer, my husband and I were hooked on watching TLC’s show “Cake Boss“. In this show, bakery owner Buddy Valastro takes unique cake requests to create ah-mazing works of art with cake. I am talking about  4 foot tall cakes, cakes with fireworks, cakes with moving pieces etc. INCREDIBLE! As my spouse and I watched Buddy and his crew whip out these masterpieces, in our minds we thought “we can do that” and wanted to give it a try! And that is how the

For this date night, you can start by inviting your most culinary-cultured friends for a cake decorating challenge using these adorable invitations! The invite challenges the other couple (or couples) to create a unique cake for another couple in the group and deliver the final product to the official date night on the designated day and time.

Then, both you and your invitees will each fill out a cake request form PRIOR to the set date night and give it to another couple. This form is a chance to give the bakers inspiration for your cake or to request a certain type of cake you would like to have made for you.

For our group date night, both the men in the group had birthdays coming up so we determined that we would make a birthday cake for him and they would make one for my spouse! It worked out perfectly!

Before the designated date night, take time to brainstorm with your spouse some of the ideas you have for the cake design. Use the design form from the other couple to focus your design.

Now it is time to bake & decorate! Each couple makes their cake on their own time to bring to the date night. We had SO much fun in the kitchen together making a mess and laughing at our lack of skills. Somehow we truly believed that by watching hours of “Cake Boss” episodes that the skill would in someway be transmitted to us. Our vision was NOT at all what we pictured it to be in our heads (or what Buddy would have created!) BUT it was a BLAST being creative and trying a new skill!

On the designated date night, each couple brings their final cakes to the delivery location (AKA the date night location) and reveals their works of art! Here is the cake that the other couple made for my husband. Isn’t it amazing? My hubby is a master scuba diver and this cake highlighted his hobby perfectly!

Now the best part – who wants a piece of cake? Everyone can now enjoy their hard work as they eat their delicious cakes! Since the Valastro family on “Cake Boss” is Italian we also paired this date with some yummy lasagna and other Italian goodness as we watched some of our favorite Cake Boss episodes!

  1. Sarina, this looks like so much fun! I love that you can have fun with just your husband doing this AND then fun with friends later too! I am just curious about what your cake looked like? I’ll bet it was so good that you ate it all up before you could get a picture:)
