Hi everyone! I am Stephanie from Somewhat Simple and I am excited to be here today to share a super fun “date night” that is sure to please everyone in the family!

Several months ago, I was talking to my sister-in-law about ways we can each add some fun to our family dinner tables. The dinner table is the perfect setting to talk about our days and make memories with each other, yet often times we get in a rut and we don’t use this valuable time to its full potential. So the two of us came up with several ideas we wanted to implement with our own families and the idea I am sharing today just happened to be one of my favorites! I call it “A Blue Ribbon Dinner” and here is how it works:

My unsuspecting family came home from school and work on a very regular day and found our dining room decked out in all things blue- I had a cute blue table cloth with blue placemats, a blue flower centerpiece, blue place settings… everything was BLUE!

I simply told them dinner would be served at 6pm and they were to wear their best blue attire. It was so fun to see what outfits they came up with! None of my boys matched, but they were dressed in every shade of blue they had in their closets! My daughter was perfectly coordinated, as usual, in her fanciest blue dress and a matching hair bow. Everyone seemed to enjoy getting dressed up for dinner, and the fun was just getting started!

Dinner was served and stayed true to the blue theme of the night- pasta with blue alfredo sauce, blue jello, blue punch, blue Whoopie Pies for dessert…. it was a fabulous spread of blue foods that had us talking, laughing and feeling blue –  in a good way!

During dinner, I pulled out some conversation cards I had made ahead of time and we each took a turn drawing and performing tasks from the activity cards. I had simple tasks like:

-Tell the person to your left 3 things you love about them

-Take a bite off the plate of the person on your right

- Sing “I’m a Little Teapot” with the motions while standing on your chair

This really made for a fun family activity! Get ready for some laughs and sweet memories! All in all, this was an evening of blue bliss- a night my family won’t soon forget!

Thanks to the Dating Divas for asking me to share my master bedroom makeover with you all.

Even though I’m a single girl right now, I still wanted my master bedroom to be cozy and serene for ME. I just finished renovating my 1979 fixer upper house and making over the master was part of that process.I already had all of my pretty antique furniture and it’s all mixed and matched for an eclectic look. None of the pieces go together, but they do, if you know what I mean.I bought a pretty dark wood sleigh bed years ago, when they were really popular and I don’t have any plans to change it out anytime soon. I still love its classic good looks.

I updated my space by re-using the pretty matelasse creamy coverlet with blues and greens.  See that checked wall treatment? I spotted it in a Southern Living idea house and thought it would be a really nice accent in my bedroom, so I did it at home using tape and paint.

Those drapes are a DIY project as well and they are stenciled with plain wall paint.  It was a bit of a job to get all 6 done, but by using Ikea ready made panels for $25 a pair, I was able to do all 3 windows for less than $100.  That little side table was a yard sale find for $5 and fits in perfectly by the chair. Budget minded for sure!

I love shopping thrift stores and yard sales and that’s where I’ve gotten a lot of my treasures, from artwork to plates and accessories.  I found the TV stand at an antiques store and brought it home, adding a fresh coat of paint.

The vanity was an antiques store find and the vanity stool was found at a yard sale for $10. I recovered it with fresh fabric and trim and it’s right at home in my master now.

Having a cozy seating area in a bedroom is one way to make it so inviting and comfy.  My chair and ottoman was a thrift store find and I recovered it with a white slipcover.  Adding pillows and throws create that texture that is important to making a bedroom warm and inviting.

Botanicals that I framed around the TV help bring in additional interest to that side of the room.  I’m also a big lover of real plants and having live ones in a space adds so much coziness to the room.

Pretty pillows and cozy linens create that haven we are all looking for and I’ve found mine. I hope these ideas that I’ve done in my master bedroom will give you some ideas for your own romantic space. Just to recap, here are a few ideas I used for my bedroom that I did on a budget: Add a reading nook if there’s room, with a chair and ottoman, along with cozy throw and pillows. Save money by stenciling your own drapes using Ikea ready made panels. Add real plants for a cozy feel to your space. Mix up the textures in your room with affordable pillows and fabrics. Find colors that you love to live with and bring them into your master bedroom.

I am so excited to be able to work with such amazing women on The Dating Divas team, they are simply wonderful!

A little but about me: I grew up in Southern California and Southern Utah. I played collegiate volleyball in Sheridan, Wyoming and Durango, Colorado. When I returned to Utah, I met my Cowboy on a blind date set up by our little sisters (who were 15) and we’ve been in Utah ever since. He surprised me on our first date by showing up in ‘skater’ clothes, since he knew I liked cowboys, and I surprised him by eating ALL of my huge plate of pasta (the wait was SOOO long and by the time we were seated, I was starving!!!). I could tell by his truck that he was a team roper and he could tell I wasn’t afraid to eat. Now, we’ve been married for 7 years and have two beautiful daughters. We love being outdoors, eating ice cream and just spending time together (in no particular order).

My first passion is learning, which fits my day job as an Elementary school teacher. I’m a life-long-learner and am always up for the challenge of something new. I pursued my interest in photography as a new art medium in High School, but volleyball paid for college so I focused on athletics and my studies. It wasn’t until I had been teaching for a few years and knew that I needed to get back to creating art, and again photography became my artistic outlet. It also allowed me the opportunity to show others how amazing they are, capture the moment and learn to appreciate simple imperfections. The sweetest glances, hair blowing in the wind and laughing make for stunning images. I love being able to capture them, preserve them and allow them to be shared with others.

Sessions with me have a balance between traditional and lifestyle, allowing for guidance in posing, but also freedom to move and play. The time passes quickly and we are always thrilled to know that the time spent together was casual and painless. So often being in front of the camera is not everyone’s favorite way to spend time, but being able to enjoy it and have those beautiful images afterward is simply delightful. I specialize in family and individual portraiture, and thrive on the being able to create artistic portraits of clients in their element; being able to photograph artists in their studio, athletes in the gym, families in their home and children jumping on the bed. Being able to show others the beauty that I see is my gift to give. We are each beautiful, our lives create art and I simply give them a chance to see it in themselves.

As much as I appreciate my husband’s job and all it provides for our family, I hate saying goodbye to him every morning! That’s why I love to send special little love notes with him, or hide them in places I know he’ll find them later. Just a quick and easy way to let him know he is missed while he’s gone all day, and to let him know he’s never far from my mind. This quick and easy banana love note would be a fun and healthy surprise for him at lunchtime! Just take a toothpick and poke small holes in the skin of a banana, spelling out your love-themed message. After a few hours, the message will be dark and visible. What an easy way to write a love note!

Texts, email, chat, Pair, Skype, Facebook, Twitter… we have endless ways to keep communication going throughout the day with our spouse. I love technology and take advantage of instant communication gratification.

BUT… there is something so romantic and timeless about writing Love Letters. Have you ever run across a stack of old love notes your grandparents wrote each other, or even an old note you wrote while dating? A letter is a memory frozen in time and paper and pen gives us the chance to express our feelings in greater depth. I love reading old letters, it’s like opening a window into someone’s heart. So today, I’m going to show you a quick and easy way to make your own Love Stationery to exchange with your honey-buns! So put down the electronics, just for a moment at least, and let’s create some special stationery to write your spouse a letter he will cherish forever.

There are a lot of software programs out there that you may already be familiar with and know how to do this, personally I use PrintShop on a Mac to create most of the things I do. But for those of you that may not have a program or aren’t familiar with those types of software, you can create your stationery in Microsoft Word, something that most everyone has. Depending on your computer and your version of Word, these steps might vary slightly.

First: Just open a blank document and either drag and drop your image, copy and paste it, or use the “insert, picture, from file” options to get your image onto your document. While the image is selected, use the “transparency” option on the right to increase the transparency until you have faded the image enough to still see it but that it won’t interfere with your writing. 

Next: Fade the edges of your image by selecting the “format” option on the right (while the image is still selected) and then select “glow and soft edges” to fade the edges of the picture out for a softer look. That’s it! Easy peasy!

If you want to get super fancy, add a monogram or your wedding date. Then print and let your heart flow onto your Love Stationery to give your spouse a tangible treasure that he can use to remember how you feel about him. (This might also come in handy if you are having a moment of “WHY did I marry you?” and need a reminder to get your heart back on track!) The fun doesn’t stop there! Find a creative way to deliver your letter: mail it to his office, leave it on his pillow with a treat, put it in a bottle and use as a centerpiece at dinner! If you want to be really fancy, seal it in an envelope with a wax seal of your monogram! You might even want to print off a variety of your new love stationery using different pictures and make a new tradition of writing to each other every anniversary.

In June I will show you a really cute way to store your love letters! So get writing! (Oh, and if you need help with creating your stationery, leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to help you figure it out!)

Got Some Extra Time BUT No Sitter?

Why not look up romantic Spanish phrases you can say to each other? You can use them throughout the night (even when kiddos are awake) OR in the bedroom later {WINK}!  Also, speak with a Spanish accent all night!

You can also make Zorro masks as a family (or couple) and wear them throughout the night.  I made mine out of construction paper but if you have old t-shirts those would be awesome, or foam paper would be great too!

If you are really adventurous make some swords out of cardboard and be your own Zorro fighters .

Got Extra Time AND A Sitter?

Why not try a traditional flamenco dance? You can do it with the hubby or perform a dance just for him!  There are SO many versions on the web, just google flamenco dance if you want another variety. Oh, and don’t forget your hot dancing shoes!

The “After Movie” Party

There is a scene in the Mask of Zorro where Elena (Zeta-Jones) tries to stop Alejandro (Banderas) from escaping her barn.  At the end of the scene she is definitely NOT successful because, he cut her clothes to shreds and she is left with no option but to drop her sword and grab a coat hanging on a hook.  Now, I am not saying you should let the hubbs cut your clothes off but why not be wearing some HOT lingerie under your clothes and he gets to find out what you are wearing {WINK}!

Or, wear your masks into the bedroom for a little masked play {WINK}!  You could also use these quotes to help spice up the bedroom…
