Patio Prom Date

2010 Patio Prom
Theme: The STARS Burn Bright for You My Love

(We decided to include ANOTHER giveaway with this date….just cuz we love our readers sooooooo much!!)

Please check out our Facebook Fan Page to see who the WINNER is!! :)

Will You Go To Prom With Me?
When I was planning this date I realized that I needed to actually ASK my husband to go with me.  That’s how it goes in high school, right?  And sticking with the high school ideas, I needed to ask him in a super fun and super corny way. 😉  My top two choices were #1) Do an outline of myself on our driveway with a rock on top of a note saying, “I would DIE if you would go to prom with me.” Or #2) Decorate his car while it’s in the parking lot of his work.

I opted for the second choice because the first choice no one would see but him and the second choice sounded like so much more fun.  So I had my sister help me trash the inside of his car.  I used confetti, balloons, crepe paper, and a big poster board that said, “Will you go to PROM with ME? Love, Ginger”. I slapped some lipstick on my lips and went to town with kissy marks all over the poster board.

The Reaction?
Or rather, his co-workers reaction? {LOL} My husband’s co-workers were scratching their heads trying to figure out why someone trashed his car.  Then when they read the poster board the question was, “Who in the heck is this Ginger girl and how OLD is she?” Haha! I got a good laugh about that. Well, my husband got made fun of and hassled quite a bit about “going to prom”. Good thing I’m married to a man who would react to his co-workers this way: “They’re just jealous ‘cause their wives don’t do cool stuff like this!” {LOL}

Kids in Bed
I wanted our prom to be a date we could do at home after the kids were in bed.  I didn’t want to pay for a babysitter and I LOVE our back patio because we have a fantastic view of the city.  So once Adam and I were all dressed up we got the kids fed and in bed before our date official started.
Tip: My kids sometimes have a tough time getting to sleep without using every excuse in the book to stay up, so I made sure to run them ragged all day long.  They were exhausted by the time bedtime rolled around.  This makes getting them to bed quick and easy. No – “I need a drink! Want a story! I need to go to the bathroom!” Haha! We ALL know how bedtime goes.

The Clothing
I didn’t want to have to purchase an actual prom dress or rent a tux for this.  Obviously that would have blown our budget out of the water.  So I picked one of my summer dresses to wear and told my husband to match his outfit with mine as best he could.  I think he did a pretty amazing job!  I did, however, purchase a second dress to wear later on in the evening from Ross (it was on clearance for $7).  We’ll just say that it’s more like my Little Black Dress, but with a little less material…;)  I wore my summer dress for our pictures and dinner.  Then I “excused” myself to use the “restroom” in order to do my quick change.  When I walked out in a different dress my husband took a double take and then his face went completely red!  Haha!  I love to throw him off like that.  He loved it…until he got a little paranoid about our neighbors seeing me in a scantily-clad dress (that may or may not have resembled bedroom attire).  That only made me laugh even harder as I invited him to dance with me.  And then he seemed to forget all about the neighbors for a while.
The Patio Décor & Poster
I used white LED lights that I purchased from Wal-Mart a few Christmas’ ago.  Any white lights will do – I like mine because the bulbs are larger and give off more light.  I stapled these lights around the top of the lattice on my patio.  I also strung them around the poster and stars that I stapled to the actual lattice.  It turned out way better than I thought it would!  It looked so official!
I made up a poster using vinyl (it would work just as great with stenciling – just so it looks more official).  It says “2010 Patio Prom Presents: The STARS burn bright for you my love.”  My theme was stars, which was perfect since it was right after the 4th of July so it was easy to find cute “star” themed accents on clearance.  Then I also made some larger stars out of poster board to accent around it.

The Pictures
What prom night is complete without pictures?  We’ve had to have some great shots to put in the scrap book.  So I had a friend of mine, Vanessa, come over and take our official Patio Prom Pictures.  I love them – they turned out so cute.  If you don’t have a friend/family member take pictures for you, use a tripod or grab a neighbor.

The Dinner Ice Bucket
This was such a fun find!  I have searched for these online to give you a reference for them, but they range in price from $7 up to $60. has a really good selection of these.  I actually found mine by chance at JoAnn Crafts for $8 on their summer clearance shelf.  I wasn’t even looking for something like this, but it was so cute that I couldn’t pass it up!  You could really use any kind of ice bucket for this.  Plastic ones work great too.  Just something that you can fill up with ice to put your drinks in.  If you want to add monogrammed vinyl, it is $1.50 (doesn’t include S&H) at  I grabbed a bottle of Welch’s Sparkling Red Grape Juice Cocktail to put in the bucket.

Plates & Bowls
I picked up two black plates and two black bowls from the dollar store.  I thought this would be a fun addition to our meal.  I’m all about having a “souvenir” from our date nights together.  I added auto vinyl to the plates and bowls to personalize them and have them add to our star theme. The plates have one big star and have our names on them. The bowls just have smaller stars on them.  I used the auto vinyl so that I can wash them without them peeling up easily.  The vinyl cost $4.50 (doesn’t include S&H) from

His & Hers Wine Glasses
I used the His & Hers glasses that Lisa M. made for all of the divas.  These were a really cute addition to all of the monogrammed dinnerwear.  Check out her post HERE.  Lisa M. was sweet enough to contribute a set of these adorable glasses to give-a-way to one of our lucky readers!

All you have to do to be eligable for this giveaway is leave a comment below stating what you love about this date and be a public follower of our blog!  Good luck!

In an effort to keep this date easy and inexpensive, I decided to do a hors d’oeuvre theme.  Instead of cooking myself (which would have taken the better part of my day and time I just didn’t have) I went to Fred Meyers and actually purchased our dinner in their deli.  What I love about Fred Meyers is they have a very good selection of gourmet hors d’oeuvre items and they are very reasonably priced.  If you don’t have a Fred Meyers where you are, pick a grocery store that has an amazing deli & bakery section.  Grocery stores like Albertson’s or Smith’s usually have a selection of gourmet items to choose from.  So you get the look & taste of a fancy meal without the restaurant prices.  Here is my food list from Fred Meyers:
Hickory Farms meat & cheese tray
Crab & Avocado Sushi
Japanese Shrimp Dumplings
Mediterranean Orzo Pasta Salad
Deli Turkey Wraps
Victorian Dessert Cup
Fancy Chocolate Cupcake
Napoleon Dessert
Chocolate Éclair

(…and NO, we didn’t even eat 1/4 of the dessert that I purchased. LOL It was a fun look though and our kids had a fun treat the next day for being good and going to bed early.)

I used the fruit that I already had in my fridge at the time (grapes, cherries & strawberries).  What I loved about doing it this way is that it was already ready to serve.  I just stuck it in my fridge until right before we were ready to eat.

Let’s Dance
I have a small speaker system for my iPod that is portable ($8 at Ross if you don’t have one).  I set this on our dinner table so we got to listen to some nice music during dinner.  We used this for our Prom playlist too.  I incorporated music from our wedding reception and new releases for us to dance to.  I don’t know about all of you, but I LOVE to dance with my hubby.  It is very romantic to me.  While we danced we talked about the Top 10 reasons why we fell in love with each other (that didn’t include physical traits, LOL).  A few of my favorite music/artist picks are:

Paramore – The Only Exception
Brian Adams – Everything I Do
Nickelback – Far Away
Nickelback – Never Gonna Be Alone
Colbie Cailat – I Never Told You
Michael Buble` – I Wanna Go home
Gavin DeGraw – We Belong Together
Taylor Swift – Today Was a Fairytale
OneRepublic – Secrets
Incubus – I Miss You

We can all pretend that this doesn’t happen, but we all know that it does.  And what prom night doesn’t include a make-out session? Haha!  So my hubby and I got into the backseat of our car (that was parked in the garage) and DOT. DOT. DOT. 😉

Don’t forget to leave a comment below stating what you love about this date and that you are a public follower of our blog so you’ll be eligable to win a set of His & Hers wine glasses courtesy of Lisa M.!  The giveaway will end at midnight on Wednesday, September 15th and the winner will be announced on Thursday the 16th on our Facebook Fan Page….so be SURE check and see if you won!!

I love the aspect of going back in time to recreate another memory with your hubby. High school sometimes isn't the easiest time, so why not have some awesome memories associated with high school instead of dreadful ones? Prom was fun back then, but to have "prom" with the one you're really going to be with for the rest of your life is magical. Besides, it's a great idea with a small price tag! Who could pass it up? Not me!

I love this date idea! I never got to go to prom when I was in high school and the college one that I went to had a horrible memory attached to it. I think this would be great fun! I love the fact that you went and changed into your "little, little black dress"!!!! That is SO something that I would do! I LOVE dancing with my husband! He loves to sneak up behind me while I am working in the kitchen and take me in his arms and start dancing with me. Sigh….so romantic!!! I am seriously considering trying this date out! And I have been a public follower for a long time.

I've been a public follower for quite a while. I love this date for all the flexibility that is involved. You could make it very formal or you could make it very informal depending on your budget, time, and wishes. I also loved that you had it in your back yard. My most favorite was how you asked him. Maby of us either didn't go to our high school proms or at least not with our husbands so, that would be a great memory to make with your husband. I can't wait to do this date with my hubby. Thank you for doing the give away I would love those his & hers glasses.

  19. Jamie says:

I love the whole prom theme of this date…especially because I never got to go on an official prom seeing as I moved out of the country right when I turned 16! This would be so fun to do with my husband!!! I can't wait to try it!!

    P.S. I'm your follower

  20. The Brindley's says:

I am a follower and I love the DOT.DOT.DOT at the end LOL. Ok really, I love that it can be done at home after kids are in bed. I find myself slacking in the dating department sometimes because I cannot think of who to have sit this time…and this you don't have to. Super cute!
