A Relaxing Evening of Fun!
While reading the blog hotdateideas.com, I came across a cute date that incorporated two of Joseph and my FAVORITE activities to do together…reading and playing games!!!! What better thing to do than have some fun competition with your husband in a great atmosphere? Because of a crazy work week my date got a little (ok, a LOT) messed up, but I will tell you how it was supposed to work out (in my head) for all of you and then how we actually did it.  🙂
Fun game night for two!
I was going to kidnap Joseph and take him to Barnes and Noble (just happens to be his favorite store) and play games in the cafe. I think the cafe has an amazing set up to have a few treats, drinks, but also have some fun, good humored competition with games. I planned on taking games such as Skip-bo, Battleship, Phase 10, Uno, and just a regular set of cards to play Slap Jack, 21, etc…
While playing games and eating treats I figured we could have a fun little bet going with the winner receiving a back rub from the loser-I was obviously betting on winning :).
Joseph LOVES walking around Barnes and Noble and browsing through books so after games I planned on browsing with him.  I was VERY excited about walking through the aisles, holding hands, and finding a book we could read together.  Aaahh, that sounds great.  I was going to finish off the night stopping by McDonald’s to get Joseph’s favorite ice cream cone.  But alas, it did not work out how I planned…but we still had a TON of fun.
This is how MY date went…
I surprised Joseph by calling him early in his day and telling him we had a date and babysitter already lined up! He was so excited! But, by the time Joseph got home from work and ate dinner, Barnes and Noble was closed so my date changed a bit. Instead of Barnes and Noble, we went to the BYU campus, with my bag full of games, found a bench by a light and let the competition begin! Like I said before, I was really planning on kicking Joseph’s behind in games, and let him know it! He just smiled and said, “Good luck with that one!” We started off with playing Uno, where I lost 3 games in a row! Ouch!!!!
We then went on to play a couple games of skip-bo before we had to head back home (got real late). If you can believe it- I lost EVERY game and gave my husband a nice backrub. Instead of stopping by McDonald’s we had cookies that night. It was a lot of fun – even being on the BYU campus. I figured being outside in the dark added another level of fun to it!
Here are a couple of our crazy pictures:

The first one Joseph was supposed to lean in with me, but that didn’t happen…

We had a blast and I hope you can too!  It was a fun, cheap, and relationship building night.  We got to do some fun flirting, talking, and cuddling under the stars!

  1. That sounds like so much fun. To be adaptable and have fun although things didn’t go as planned is very important, too.
As I was reading this, I thought it would also be fun to have a bookstore date where you can each browse the shelves and come back with books about things you would like to do together or for each other — whether it’s about travel, art, sports, cooking, anything. I had already been thinking about a suggestion I read somewhere else to get used books and highlight random words on a page to make a romantic message. Books are great!

  2. I love that you just rolled with it! Thats marriage saving advice right there. Thanks for the great date idea.
