Military Week: Date Night

Happy 4th of July!

What a perfect day to kick off our very first “Military Week” here at The Dating Divas.  We are super excited to do be doing a little something to give back to those who serve our country!  Although we personally do not have spouses serving in the military, each of us either has a brother, father, in-law, friend, or neighbor that serves and we just wanted to give a little bit of hope for these military marriages.

UPDATE: We’re SO excited to introduce our brand new Long Distance Love Kit!

Long Distance Love Kit

It’s packed full! Including: a long distance relationship care package, a long distance date in a box, a countdown tracker, long distance prescription gift, AND some long distance romance tips! CHECK IT OUT!

Now without further ado, let me present to you our very first Military Date-in-a-Box for long distance couples.

This was given to our lucky reader, Catherine and her husband, who won our military couple giveaway back in March.

Here is Catherine’s story:

“My husband was sent overseas last year and just after he left we discovered I was pregnant. We were overjoyed, but our happiness was also consumed with worry as I was incredibly sick from the day we found out. I was in and out of the hospital many times until I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarium.

Through it all, my husband and I remained committed to him fulfilling his obligation to his unit and requested that he be allowed to stay overseas. He served proudly until at 22 weeks I became even sicker and the doctors diagnosed me with a life threatening heart condition. At this point my husband was sent home from his deployment. He was by my side encouraging me as I fought to stay pregnant until it was safe to deliver our baby.

Our daughter was born in October 2010. My husband had been promised another position that would keep him home while I recover for, but the military had other plans and he is once again deployed. It was harder for him to leave this time as he knows he is going to miss so much, and I am not yet at 100%. In addition, our daughter was just diagnosed with a blood disorder and will be receiving difficult treatments while her daddy is away.

My husband deserves to have some romance put back into our relationship through your date in a box. He is so hard working, whether it be serving our country or taking care of my daughter and I. We often struggle to connect through all the illness, stress, and fatigue we have been faced with. We miss being able to date the way that we did before the events of the last year changed our lives.  I feel a date in the box would raise his spirits immensely. I want to show him that the spark is still there and offer him a creative way to reconnect despite the distance.”

Now as hard as choosing a winner was, I think everyone would agree how deserving Catherine and her husband are of this date!  This fun long distance date consists of an “attention-getter” AKA something to get your spouse wondering….., the “Survival Gear”,  a “Food Kit” & “Love Kit”.  Sounds like fun, right?!?

Here is what you’ll need to do to prep this date…

First, print off  the below printables.

Then, gather everything you need to make this survival date in a box….starting with the “Survival Gear”!

“Survival” Gear

Items To Include:

*Any movie having a survival or boat theme.  {I found Hook at Target for $4! It was perfect for this date.}

*Temporary fish tattoos

*”Don’t Let Our Love Boat Sink” game, which I laminated. {This is basically the game, “Battleship”….but “cute-si-fied!}  Include a dry erase marker to play over and over again.  Oh, and of course, the official rules…we don’t want any cheaters. 😉

“Survival” Food

Items To Include:

*Any treats your spouse loves

*To stick with the theme…you could also include lifesavers candies, shark gummies, Swedish or gold fish etc…

“Survival Love” Kit

Items To Include:

*Lots of Hugs and a BIG KISS!  (Feel free to add whatever you’d like. *wink*)

*Make sure to purchase 2 of everything since you will be doing this date with your spouse.  You’ll want to make sure you have the game, food, tattoos, movie and anything else on hand so you can enjoy this time together. {You will be packing ONE set & keeping the OTHER!}

Now that you have prepped everything……onto actually GOING on the date!

To kick off the date, mail your spouse this little surprise:

Amberlee over at tells us anything 13 ounces or less can be mailed without any sort of packaging.  How much fun to receive just a boat in the mail??  This will definitely keep your spouse wondering what’s going on. I found a cheap toy boat at the 99cent store, and attached mailing labels and stamps wherever I could.  Soooo…..head on over to YOUR local dollar store and pick out something light that you can mail to your spouse to get the curiousity going…..

After your spouse receives the surprise toy boat {or whatever fun object you choose}, go ahead and mail off the date.

Everything should fit perfectly in a small flat rate box.  This will hopefully save on shipping and keep your dates inexpensive.

Once your spouse receives the fun “Date-in-a-Box”, plan a time to go on your date.

On your date night….you can talk on the phone or chat/email back and forth while you are both doing your activities.  If you are one of the lucky few that can Skype….then do that!  You can pull out your “Survival Gear” and apply your tattoos together.  If you want you could even use THIS tutorial and make silly sailor hats to decorate and wear during your date.  Then whip out your “Don’t Let Our Love Boat Sink” game and play each other while eating your “Survival Food” kit.  You could also include a recipe card with your “Survival Food” kit and cook and eat the same meal together (…if circumstances allow, of course.).  At the end of your night, use your “Survival Love” kit and watch your movie together.

Now, you better not let this be your first AND last long-distance date night!  Keep the romance….and dating….going!  Here is a list of fun date ideas we have already aired that would be perfect for doing as a long distance couple….even if you have to tweak something a little bit. 🙂

  1. Thank you for doing ideas for sending packages overseas! I wish I had this idea last year when my husband was deployed. Will use it next time! I would like to be entered in the giveaway;)

  2. My husband is in the Air Force. We feel lucky to have him home right now, since he is supposed to be in Afghanistan. These are all great ideas and a great prize!

  3. My husband is currently serving in Afghanistan for a year. Would love to have these books as a source of encouragement for both of us! Please enter me in the giveaway! Thanks! 🙂

  4. My husband is in the Air Force, he will be going on his first deployment soon. Thank you so much for doing military week! I have also been a subscriber of your newsletter for awhile now, and also a fan of your facebook page (twitter too!).

  5. My husband is currently waiting to train to be an Army Ranger! He’s already been through BCT, AIT, and’s been a long 8 months of training and we will be apart for another three months still…these ideas will help us. Thanks Divas.

  6. Left a shout out on my Facebook!”Divas are at it again! My fellow military buddies…check them out for ideas and tips on how to make being a military spouse more fun. Plus they have some fun giveaways!”

  7. I love Dating Divas! I wish I knew about these ideas a year ago when my husband began his deployment. He’s home now and I know that there will be another deployment in the future. Too bad there is only one winner for the books. I think every military spouse should have one. Being the one left at home is a tough job especially with children.

  8. These are great ideas! Glad that you are all thinking of the military. First time my husband was deployed I felt like we didn’t have any support or information. So glad to see that things are changing!!

  9. I just came upon this date idea while devouring your other fabulous date ideas! We have 4 children (from 10yrs down to 3 months) and my husband is only home 6 days a month. He works out of state the other 3 weeks. This is a FANTASTIC idea for us as sometimes we don’t even get a date when he IS home. I’m going to use this on his next rotation. Thanks so much for all the great ideas.

  10. Hi Kristen,

First time visiting this blog, found you through Pinterest. And I love this post! It is soooo creative! I wish I had been this resourceful when my then-husband was deployed. Makes my heart ache that I wasn’t, and it makes a tear come to my eyes that you are. I know this post dates a few years back, but what a wonderful wife you were; and I bet you still are! Lots of love and strength to both of you!!
