“Lucky in Love” DIY Keychain

We’ve all done it. Wandered around the craft store with no intention of buying anything until you see IT. Yep, my IT this time were these fabulous alphabet letters. How cool are they?? My mind ran with all the fun things I could make with these letters. So I bought them. And I am so glad!

I am going to share with you how I created my first project with these – a super cool Lucky in Love Keychain. The best part is we’re also giving you a fun free printable inspired by Diva Tara and created by the super talented Leah Aldous. {squeal!} I just LOVE her designs. It’s made to look just like a jewelry holder and will give your project a professional finish! I thought this would be a perfect Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day gift… but really it would be fun for a birthday or anniversary, too!

For this project you are going to need to get your own  Letter Punch Set, or find a friend who has them and wants to share. :) After I bought mine I saw this Impress Art site and LOVED the different fonts they have for their letters.

The tools you will need are a hammer and a drill. You can buy a special hammer to do this, but I just used the one in our toolbox:)

I picked up my brass stamping blanks at JoAnn’s Craft store but you can get 200 Antiqued Brass Stamping Tags for a really good price:) Think of all the key chains you could make with those!!

Pick out the penny you want to use for your keychain. If you can, find a date that is sentimental to you- like the year you got married, or your first date, or even this year if it’s going to be your luckiest yet!  :) Use a drill bit to go through your penny. You need this hole to attach the pieces together and to your keychain ring.

Here’s what they look like once you’ve drilled through. Make sure you are drilling into an extra wooden block or something else you don’t mind drilling through. Probably not your kitchen table, unless you are wanting a new one. {wink!} Something cool I learned doing this project is that a drill can go in reverse! Maybe you all knew that but it was new to me. So I have to confess… even though I was making this for my husband, I totally had him help me with this. It actually  made this project a lot more fun having him work on it with me. If you love DIY gifts for your guy you’ll also have to check out our post on DIY Gift Ideas for Your Man.

Once you have your hole drilled choose your letters that you want to punch. I used our initials {awww love it} but you could put your full names too if they are short.

Use your hammer to pound it down a few times. Don’t be a wimp, you gotta put a little bit of muscle into it. I found this video REALLY helpful as I was doing this project. It’s short and totally worth watching. Promise!

Once you’ve done your initials, color over your letters with a Sharpie marker then rub it off with a tissue or cloth to leave it a little darker. I tried it with brown but think black works the best for this project.

Then you are going to do the same thing with your disk. We started in the middle and worked our way out to make sure it would be centered. I really wanted to find a train to flatten a penny to use for this disk (how cool would that be!!) but when I finally found where train tracks are around here, I didn’t want to wait around for a train to come. If you try doing that, I would LOVE to hear how it worked for you.

There was not quite as big of a difference with the Sharpie colored letters with this disk, but I still think it makes it stand out more.

To finish up your project you just need to put your keychain attachment on to hook the pieces together and then pop it into your gorgeous printable card. You can use a twisty to attach it to the back. Perfect! Now you have a thoughtful and super cute gift to give.

***We called the U.S. Mint and were able to talk to a representative to make sure using U.S. coins in our craft wasn’t breaking any laws. She let us know that making crafts/projects/jewelry with them is completely fine as long as there isn’t any fraudulent intent.***
