OK, so football season is fun and exciting for most of us. We get to support our favorite team whether it be the University that we attended or the town in which we grew up in. Maybe even a team that we just grew to love over the years. Whatever the reason, we generally follow a specific team. This makes watching games more exciting.
I enjoy watching that special team with my husband. We happen to be Utah Ute Fans, as that is where my husband graduated from. We also watch the Utah Aggie’s but aren’t as die hard for them. We love the Utes and have apparel that shows our support for his school.
Recently I made my husband a Ute blanket to take with us to games, or to just snuggle up together at home in while we watch the big game. It is also there to bug those fans who come to our house who aren’t Ute fans themselves. I decided to make him a blanket as an extra gift. It was super easy to complete and literally took no time at all.
I went to the craft store, picked out my fabric, and was already half way done. Then I had my lovely sister-in-law do a simple stitch around the outside of the blanket. ( I have tried sewing and am just not good at it. Even a simple stitch! Â I know, I am working on it.) Finally, I cut up to the stitch on all four sides of the blanket about an inch apart, threw it in the washing machine, and I was done. I had made a rag blanket and my husband loves it. We take it everywhere with us and it took little effort to complete! I included the printable to help make your blanket look more special with the saying “Love is the Thread that Binds US Together.”
The lovely and talented Aileen created the printable just for us to use. It is perfect and she did a great job. Make sure that you check out other things that she has made or put together at her shop.
We came up with colors that should be neutral enough to work with almost any team. So enjoy and I’m sure your husband will love his new blanket!
Love this Lis! I want to make Nate a Utah one… he is a Y fan… LOL
This is a super simple project…and doesn’t even have to be sewn if you use fleece fabric.
What you’ll need:
1-2/3 yds. of print outerwear fleece 1-2/3 yds. of a solid outerwear fleece Tape measure
•Cut a square of each fabric that measures from 56″ to 58″ square. This measurement should be a whole number. Remove the selvages (fabric fray)
•Place the squares over each other, wrong sides together.
•Cut a 5″ square from each corner.
•To cut fringe, lay one piece of fabric on the floor/table, and then fold the 5″ to be fringed back.
•Cut fringe 1″ wide and 5″ deep on all sides.
•Using a overhand knot, tie the front and back fringe together.
•
Do this all the way around the blanket being careful not to stretch the fabric.
In no time at all you’ll have a beautiful no-sew blanket that’s warm and attractive.
And because it’s so easy, you’ll have time to make a no-sew, hand-tied pillow to match!
Just cut a square of fabric that is 18″ plus 10″ square. Follow the same steps as the blanket, but to assemble, tie the three sides, and then slip the pillow inside. Tie the front and back fringe. Finish tying and you’re done.
It’s that easy!

I have done this and my husband loves it!!! He really does use it which surprised me. It is the NCAA Auburn themed and it matches his “man cave”!! Great idea, and really easy to do… Took me only one night.
Love this idea! I am going to make a Notre Dame one for hubby! Thank you for a wonderful idea!
I love it! I would love to make this, but we live far from our alma maters, and all the Austin, Texas stores carry are UT and Texas A & M. Anyone know of an inexpensive online resource for these printed achool fleeces?
Thanks! It was super easy and I dont really sew either. I bought both fabrics at the store and both are flannel patterns. I sewed the two different patterns together. I bought a yard and a half of each fabric.
I LOVE this blanket! I want to make one for my hubby for his birthday next month! I like Tara’s question, what size did you make, and what kind of material is it? It looks like Flannel to me, but I’ve only seen the one design in fleece…so is it fleece on the front and flannel on the back?
It turned out AWESOME!! I started laughing thinking about how I could make a blanket like this for Jamie….one side would be the UTES for him…and the other side could be BYU! lol TOO funny! 🙂 Hey – could you post the measurements of the sizing on the fabric you used? Thanks!
I’m so in love with this blog. I’ve posted your button, wrote a blog post about this, and shared it on facebook. I love love love that you’re putting out ideas on how to be kind to your spouse or loved one! Thank you! I’ll be checking in daily ha ha. Oh, I’ve been pinning you too. Obsessed? I’d rather call it excited.
Steph
That looks like a lot of fun. We need some more snuggling football time in our home.
Is that double sided fabric or did “you” sew two together? Great, simple idea. Thanks for sharing!
I really like this idea! I am not an expert seamstress, but I think I could manage this one! Great idea!! How much fabric did you buy?
