Playdough Family Fun!

“Thursday Thrills!” That’s what my mother called our bonus family night during the middle of the week.  Oh, the memories!  What will your kids remember about family time when they’re grown?  These moments are most unforgettable when you can find a way to laugh together – and if you have little kids, this family fun idea is not only easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, but it’s perfect to include them!

Leprechaun Play Dough

Gather everyone ’round the table and awaken the inner artists in your family with some Leprechaun play dough.

WARNING: Silliness is about to ensue!

In case you’re wondering…yes, I totally chopped up some old t-shirts that I use as bibs and easily double as art smocks!  Also, I planned on making the play dough GREEN, buuut… my boys just wanted blue so… whatcha gonna do?  Can you guess this little creation below?  Those are piano keys {of course.}  😀

This play dough recipe is ~ NO JOKE ~ just like the brand name real thing!  NOT grainy.  NOT crumbly.  NOT sticky.  It’s tried, tested, and mother approved (…and the best part?  NO cooking over the stove!)

2 cups of plain flour
4 tablespoons of Cream of Tartar
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
2 cups of BOILING water
green {blue+yellow) food coloring

Stir until doughy, throw it on a floured counter, knead it until the color is all mixed in as it has gathered the flour from the counter and it’s perfectly un-sticky… then you’re done!  It’s simple and can provide weeks of play. Store in an air tight container {ziplock baggies are easy} and it will last for months.  If you’re going for the Leprechaun style, toss in some green glitter to your dough mixture too, Little Miss Fancy Pants, you!

Praise your children and their creations. The sillier you are, the more creative they seem to get! Like this lil’ cowboy hat became a fashion show with everyone taking a turn {LOL.}

Oh, and make sure you get Dad involved.  Without fail, dads seem to come up with one of the following:  a sports item, a dangerous animal, or something sillier than the kids like a pair of funky glasses that are totally picture-worthy. HA! What is your hubby gonna create?

Make it a fun O’ Holly-joliday for your big and wee lads and lassies!

  1. Thanks for the neat idea and the awesome site. I will admit I am in a slump. We dated 7 years, been married 8 years, and now have a 3 and a 1 year old boy. People, I’m running out of steam…..but your site is getting me motivated again. Thanks!

  2. Daddy/daughter dates need to happen as well as mother/son dates, so I think the ideas are great for coming up with things for them to do as well. Any helpful ideas I can pass along is appreciated. Thanks!

  3. Personally I LOVE that you also haver fun ideas such as this one that involve children & your man. So contrary to some of the comments above I hope you keep these ideas coming as well.

  4. Thank You for the Variety of ideas that you provide. I am single with no children. Love all of your ideas and have been able to put many of them to use with my friends, family, co-workers, nieces, nephews, etc. A few adjustments and they work well with most any audience. Most recently the kids in our church youthgroup loved a special treat of Lucky Charms for St. Pats. OH! and the muffin pan Valentines idea … LOVE, LOVE, LOVE !! I recently adjusted for a friend who is expecting her first child … count down the months of pregnancy with a surprise each month.

  5. I have to agree with the above commenter. I have kids myself, but look at this site for ideas for hubby/wife time. I love my kiddies, but there are tons of sites out there with lots of activities for them, and I love coming here for date ideas! I Love dating divas- but let’s just stay with dates! 🙂

    1. The great thing about our date ideas is you can take any of them and make them into a date to do with just you and your spouse.

  6. Warning: Don’t use metal cookie cutters…only plastic! My mom used to do this with us so I did it with my nieces a while back…the salt ruined ALL of my really expensive cookie cutters. I was slightly devastated.

  7. Thanks for the idea- but for those of us with no children… we would LOVE more dating ideas! 🙂

    1. Erica! This would be a super fun date night with the hubby… acting like kids again!! We will get you more dates… no worries! 🙂
