The Lowdown on Twitter

Hashtag what?! Tweet who?! For those of you who aren’t a part of the Twitter scene it can seem overwhelming.  But in actuality, it’s much easier and more fun than you’ve ever imagined!
What is Twitter Exactly?!
Twitter allows you to write a message of up to a 140 characters in length.  This message can be formulated as a status update, question, promotion, quote, opinion, and/or a link to a favorite website or picture.  These short messages makes it easy for followers to read and respond. In turn, by following your favorite websites, celebrities and friends, you are able capture the highlights of what’s going on and not miss a beat! Don’t hesitate any longer, FOLLOW US {and more} on Twitter!
How to get Started?

Fill in your name, email, {create a} password and click Sign up for Twitter.  The GREAT thing about Twitter is that is has a HELPFUL, step-by-step process for creating your account.  It even assists you in finding celebrities, websites, and friends you want to follow, making it easy to get started right away! Twitter will send you an email to confirm the creation of your account – be SURE to accept!  😉
Once you have set up and confirmed your account you are ready to begin Tweeting!  Take a deep breath… it will be fun! Your home page will look something similar to this:

If you are familiar with Facebook, the purple section is similar to the “newsfeed” on Facebook.  Here is where you will see all the latest tweets by those you follow! The two blue circles show you where you can create your own tweet for your followers to read!

Now, I’m sure during setup you chose to follow The Dating Divas (@DatingDivas) but, you can also find people and sites you’d like to follow by searching in the top bar seen in the yellow circle.  Highlighted on the left, in the green circle, are suggestions from Twitter of people you may want to follow.  These suggestions may be based on other people and sites you are already following!

2 Quick Tips for Understanding Twitter:

1. The @ symbol you see is given to everyone as part of your username.  For example, our username is @DatingDivas.  If we were to tweet a question, you could respond to us by typing our username into your tweet and then answering the question.  That way, all your followers would understand who you are directing your response to & WE would see it as well.

2. HASHTAGS! Oh my! You probably see these pop up all the time during your favorite TV shows.  If you were to type that hashtag, as seen on TV, into the search bar, you would be able to see all the tweets people are making in reference to that show.  OR for example, if you searched #datenight in the the search bar, you might just see US!!!  Basically, hashtags help you follow specific topics more closely!

  1. Thanks for the helpful explanation on Twitter! I’ve never understood it much, but it’s also the one ‘social networking’ site I refuse to join, unfortunately. I spend way too much time online now as it is and Twitter does not seem to add anything to my life. Facebook is nice to catch up with old friends when I’m feeling nostalgic, Pinterest gives me so many ideas on ways to improve my life, emails and blogs have their place as well…but Twitter is where I’ve decided to draw the line. I do still keep up with The Dating Divas via Pinterest, Facebook and this blog though, so I won’t definitely won’t lose touch with this site! Even if I don’t get tweets about it. 🙂
