The Post-it Note Date

It’s back to school time and we emptied all of our penny jars just to get the kids some new school clothes this year. That didn’t leave us much leftover for our upcoming date, so I had to get clever and think CHEAP! While I was out collecting a few school supplies for the kids, I ran across Post-it Notes and the light bulb went off! My wonderful neighbor had told me about an anniversary he had with his wife one year where he put Post-it Notes on the light switches saying “Turn me on instead”!

So I took that idea and ran with it!

I acted pretty casual in telling him to plan on going to dinner that night. I didn’t want him to know that I had anything else in store for us.  I had to plan carefully to get him out of the house just long enough for me to stage the scene. So I insisted that he take the kiddos to the babysitters while I finished getting ready. 😉 I also asked him to be Mr. Charming for the evening and pick me up for our date at the front door when he returned. It was a good way to be sure that he didn’t get a sneak peak at the “dessert” I had planned for us at home!

To stage the house I simply put these notes on the TV, remotes, laptop, light switches and pretty much ANY electronic item I knew he might look at or turn on when we got home. HINT: If you are planning on being sneaky & need to rush to set up while the spouse is out…write all of your notes in advance so all you have to do is POST them!  🙂

I wanted to stick with the “turn me on” theme. So instead of your typical rose petal path, I dropped a few of my clothing items to create a pathway to entice him along the way.

Ultimately the pathway led to our bedroom, which was showered in notes. He was pretty curious about what was in store for us! Each note had a question on it that was either funny, intimate, or endearing. For the rest of  the night we spent our time learning, laughing, and LOVING each other.

Just to top off the date I slapped this last little note on his steering wheel, as a reminder of our fabulously simple but intimate date!!

This was THEE BEST DATE for me and mine! Simply because it was inexpensive to pull off, quick to put together, and helped us connect when we needed it!

Check out this other super simple at home date!

I am a wife to one, mom to five, and pet owner to two. I consider myself very fulfilled in this journey we call life. If you were to visit my home, you would quickly discover that my kids come first and above all else. They keep me busy and on my toes, which doesn't leave a lot a wiggle room for much else. But somehow we make it all work and keep chugging along. My husband, Dom, is my rock. He helps me keep my head on straight when I need it the most. I love all the moments that I get to spend with my husband, children, family and friends. They bring me endless joy every day and I cherish them all. In my "extra" time I enjoy movies, girls nights out, date nights, shopping, projects, vacations and sometimes.........doing nothing at all!!

  2. I love this site! We are on a tight budget and have to create our own fun. I would love to use these ideas and printables, but I’m unable to see the photos on any page and keep getting a “bad gateway” screen when trying to download the printables. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  4. I LOVE this idea – sweet and cheap and totally up my husband’s alley! He’s not big on treats like candy or baked goods, he doesn’t like sports of breakfast in bed, so I have to be really creative.

  5. Love this idea! one of my pet peeves is the need to check e-mail, fantasy baseball/football when we come home from a great night out… a real mood killer for me! I am going to try this out the next time we head out 🙂 thanks!
