Gotta love that childhood sing-song rhyme we all used to chant in elementary school! Who says we can’t say it  once we grow up? Thanks to the talents of the darling Merrymint gals, they used this rhyme to help me turn the song Jamie & I danced to at our wedding… into gorgeous art!

Home Decor Gift Idea

It’s SO easy to make one for yourself!

{This could also be an awesome anniversary gift, a meaningful Valentine’s Day gift, or the PERFECT gift for a wedding or bridal shower!}

#1) SUPPLIES – gather up your supplies. You don’t need a whole lot to make this darling piece of art! Grab a pair of scissors, adhesive of some type {I recommend something like this – it will pop things up to make them look more 3-D}, an 8×10 frame, 4 sheets of white cardstock, a black pen, distressing ink {totally optional}, and some cute ribbon or baker’s twine. Other then that – you just need the printables. I have them linked up below in the steps where you will need them.

#2) LYRICS – In Word, open up a new document and make sure it’s in “landscape” mode. Type up the lyrics to the song that has the most meaning to you & your spouse. If you can’t remember all of the words, you can Google it. I like to use this site to find mine but there are all sorts of websites out there that showcase song lyrics. Once you have your song typed up, it’s time to make it look FUN! You can bold the title, change different parts of the song to a different font, or even add color! Once you have it exactly the way you want it, copy the entire song and paste it over and over again in your document so the entire page is covered. {See example below.} If your song happens to be any of the following: RealizeCan’t Take My Eyes Off Of YouHold My Hand, and You Raise Me Up…. then you are in LUCK! I happened to create this for my family members for Christmas. Here’s the PDF for those songs.

#3) PRINTING THE LYRICS & TREE – Once you are finished typing up your lyrics, print them onto white cardstock. Once printed, put it back into the printer and print our Tree Template {download at the bottom of this post} onto that sheet so the outline of the tree is on top of your lyrics.

#4) PRINTING THE HEARTS & TAG – You will also want to print off our Printable Hearts  {download at the bottom of this post. The has directions on it too.} And our Printable Tag {download also at the bottom of this post.} If you are giving this to your sweetheart or to a friend, you can hole-punch and attach the tag to the outside of your present.

#5) CUT – Time to cut everything out! Cut out all four hearts, the tree, and the tag if you’d like. You can also cut two 12-inch pieces of ribbon/twine. You will probably be cutting that length down but it’s better to be safe then sorry. 🙂 Also cut out a piece of white cardstock to be the background for your art, you’ll want it to be sized 8×10 inches. If you want to change things up, you could also have a fun pattern for the background. I like the clean simplicity of a blank background, so I just used white.

#6) INK – This step is completely optional. I LOVE to ink, so I rubbed a little bit of black scrapbooking ink on the outside of the tree and the hearts. I LOVE the fluid chalk kind. It’s super easy to hold in your hand.

#7) WRITE – In your best handwriting, print your name on one of the smaller hearts and your sweetheart’s name on the other. OPTIONAL: You can also draw a tiny black heart on the tree… to look like a squirrel hole. 🙂 Below is an up close peek at what mine looks like once finished…

DIY Gift Idea

#8) ADHERE – Time to put the tree on!! I like to use the square adhesives, it makes the tree/heart pop off the page to make it look a little more interesting. Place them on the back of your tree and attach the tree to your background.

#9) HEARTS/TWINE – Before securing the twine, I placed the hearts where I wanted them. I then secured the bottom of the twine {this would be covered by the heart} to the background page and then tied the top on the tree limb. Trim the ribbon/twine down once it’s tied. When I was done, I adhered the larger hearts on top.

#10) ALMOST DONE – Put your work of art inside your frame… don’t worry, the little hearts are coming…

#11) THE LITTLE HEARTS – Put adhesive on the smaller hearts, and put them on the glass of the frame… on the OUTSIDE! Yeppers, we threw in a little twist there. 🙂 You can always put this part inside the frame if you want, but I LOVE the look of mine on the outside. Either way {inside or outside the frame}, I love how it looks when layering the hearts. It gives it a little border.

#12) WRAP ‘ER UP – You are DONE! Wrap that bad boy up to give to your sweetie!

  1. I made this cute design on my son’s and DIL’s anniversary card this year, inside I wrote out Corinthians 13:4-8a (ESV).

  2. I made my own version of your craft. It came out amazing. Though I wouldn’t want to do it last minute though. I did a black background for a night effect and since my boyfriend is a computer programmer I wrote I love you twice in binary. I don’t know it, but google is my best friend!! Any way. Thank you so much for the idea. Wish I could share the pic with you.

    1. Thank you so much for making this and sharing it!! I can’t WAIT to make it for my hub for Valentine’s Day!! I just LOVE it!! ❤️❤️

  3. Hi, I love this project. I first made this for my boyfriend, now my husband, in 2014. Ever since then I have made this for all of my friends who have gotten married over the years. Each one loved it and they have it displayed in their homes to this day! I am in the process of making one more for our good friend,. who married us last year, as he is getting married on November 23, 2019!. Another one will be getting this as a gift for Christmas! 🙂

    1. I LOVE that you have made this for yourself + your friends! You are too cute!! Thank you so much for sharing and thank you for spreading the love to your loved ones. Gifts from the heart are the best and you TOTALLY get it!! xoxo

  4. Thank you so much for the idea and the templates. I was able to make a couple for Valentine’s gifts and they came out great. when crafters and artists share the world is a more beautiful place : )

  5. Thank you so much for sharing your designs. Just Beautiful. I know I made several mistakes as I tried to download.
Thank you again. I have 4 married children that are going love this for Valentines.

  6. Thank you for sharing this craft! I have great plans to create Halloween trees for grandparents (wise owls) and their grandkids (pumpkins)!

    1. Hi Betty, unfortunately since we originally shared this way back in 2007 we’ve seen a lot of people take it and share it as their own design. But we love it and still want to share it with our readers (for free) 😉 so we just keep updating it and re-vamping every few years because it’s such a classic! 🙂 Thank you so much for letting us know! XO

  7. I’m planning on making this, my question is do you use the card paper to print the trees and hearts? or do you use regular printer paper? also, do you print several trees and glue them on top of eachother or just use one tree? i’m a little confused, in the photo up top i see two sheets with lyrics on them and trees.

    1. Krystal, I used cardstock to make sure it didn’t curl or bend and give it a little more dimension. I think you can do either with the trees but I did two on top of each other to give dimension! XO

  8. Hi Tara! Thanks so much for this DIY post. I’m making this as a wedding gift for a friend using their first dance song.
Any tips on how to master tying a tiny bow when you tie the twine on the branch? 🙂

    1. Hi Candace! So glad you like this post! You can find some tutorials on Youtube that I bet will help. Search for “tying a tiny ribbon with a fork”. Ha! The fork is the key. {Wink} Have a great day! XO

  9. Thank you for this! I have been married to my hero for 41 years and have loved every moment with him. I am making this form him for Valentines Day. Our song is “You’re are so beautiful” by Joe Cocker. There aren’t many words, but the message is perfect. Our life is beautiful.

    1. Mary, that is so AMAZING! Congratulations on 41 years! Thank you so much for sharing that and your kind words! (I LOVE that song too)! Have a great day! XO

    1. Marisa, so happy you liked it! Thank you so much for your sweet comment. We hope your daughter and her new hubby love it! XO

  10. I’m afraid “hangin’ by a rope from a tree branch” has a different sort of meaning, where I’m from…. It’s like a romantic lynching.

    1. Jeff, oh my gosh!! That’s kind of awful and funny at the same time. We definitely didn’t think of it as a romantic lynching! Yikes!

  11. I am making this for my Son and Daughter in law and want to incorporate their dogs in a different way than the hearts. I would really like for it to be something that doesn’t really belong (like hearts are not found in trees), and not literal (ie: bone, dog dish)

    Any suggestions??

    1. Hey Traci! Hmmm… that’s a tricky one. A few ideas: Write the dogs’ names on the tree, cute bowls at the base of the tree with their names on it, birdhouse with their names on it, dog tags hanging in tree? You didn’t want anything literal… ha! Sorry, a few of those ideas ARE literal. You can also go to a scrapbooking store to get darling stickers.. things like the dog bowls, etc, so then you don’t have to freehand it. Hope that helps! xoxo

  12. My Girlfriend decided we should make each other something for our first Valentines together. I couldn’t think of anything I would be able to make, not being the arts and crafts type. I came across your website and thought…hmmm..I think I might be able to pull that off. I did and she loved it! Although it took me 13 hours to do (no joke) it was well worth the smile on her face and the tears of happiness in her eyes. I least I think they were happy tears! Lol. Anyways, thanks a bunch for putting that on your site.

  13. Hi, I’m freaking out a little bit. I’m making this for my boyfriend for v-day and just printed the tree over my lyrics. The problem is that the tree printed too small on the page! Help?!

    1. Hey Hollie!

I’m going to guess it has something to do with your printer settings. Try starting there? Hope that helps! XO

  14. Just made this for my husband for Valentine’s Day using “Home” by Blue October. BTW, your affiliate link for the sticky squares isn’t for the foam ones, but the flat ones – something I didn’t notice until they came in the mail. My tree doesn’t pop, but I layered a bunch between the hearts to get a little 3-D effect going. Thanks for the instructions and the PDFs!

    1. I’m so glad you made it! He’ll LOVE it! And yikes on our link! Thanks for letting us know! We’ll get that switched out. XOXO

  15. So I’m sitting at home on a snowy day and I come across this on Pinterest. I absolutely love it! I just made it for my daughter and her boyfriend. They are away on a ski trip and I will be headed to their home tomorrow. I’m going to leave it set up on their mantle. Nice surprise!

    1. Hi Cindi! Thank you so much for your sweet comment and for reading! We hope you enjoyed making it and be sure to check out all of our fabulous gift ideas! XOXO

  16. I loved this and made it for my boyfriend last Valentine’s Day. Since then I made 2 more for each of my friends who were married in 2015.

  17. Hi! I blog over at sundaesandspaghetti.blogspot.com. I am creating a post of cool Valentine day decorations, and love, love, love this!. May I use a picture in my college. I will be sure to link your picture back to you. Thanks so much!

  18. Hello..with Valentines coming up next month..I love the Two little lovers sitting in a tree project..just a heads up the hearts won’t print out when you print that page for some reason..but I can draw them.. I think this could be used for a family tree too or just to add your children’s names to it too..

    1. Hmmm, I just tried it and I was able to print the hearts? I wonder if it has something to do with your computer or printer settings? And YES! This could be great for a family tree as well! XOXO

  19. aaaaah! I love this, and it only took me maaaaybe 2 hours to throw it together. I really hope my cousin and his new wife love this, it looks so fantastic, thank you!

  20. I love this. I made this for my boyfriend for Valentine’s Day and used our song “Two Less Lonely People” by Air Supply and I have made it for friends of mine who were married this year. I got the greatest compliment from my boyfriend and my friend. She thought I bought it and was very surprised that I made it!! I coordinated the background with her wedding colors of aquamarine and set it in a black cherry picture frame. She loves loves loves it!

  21. Hi, I love these! I was wondering if you knew if there was any way for me to change the design, from the tree to other options, such as a heart or flower?

    1. Hi Kayla! Unfortunately, our designs are not editable, but it would be a simple thing for a graphic designer to make if you wanted to commission one!

  22. Whew!! I’ve lost it somewhere! I made my lyrics copy landscape and printed. When I put the copy back to print the tree PDF, the tree is coming out portrait on the landscape copy…..obviously, I’m not as techy as I thought. This ADD brain can’t figure it out!! Making this for my daughter’s first anniversary!! Please help. Thanks!!!!

    1. Hi Susan! Hmmm, I think you might just need to double check your settings before printing the tree to make sure it’s sent to landscape! Hope that helps!!

  23. I absolutely love this!!!! I have made 3 so far! 2 for anniversary presents and 1 for a wedding gift! They were very well received! You are a genious! Bravo! I have another wedding coming up and I think I’ll make one for them too! Thank you sooo much for sharing! Now if I could only figure out how to get my Cricut Explore to cut the tree, it would save time and not be cut by my clumsy self!!!!

    1. LOL… I totally hear you on cutting out the tree! It takes even MORE time to ink it! Where the machine that can do that for us?? 😉 Have so much fun giving these gifts away! XOXO

    1. Hey Kat! There are links throughout the post for the printables… just go back through and read it carefully and you’ll see. Have fun making this! XO

  24. Love this! Just made one for a friend’s bridal shower. I used light gray for the background with a white frame and solid red twine. I hope she loves it!

  25. Love this! I made it for a friend’s wedding. They have 3 boys, so I also cut out 3 little birds and added them to the tree.

    So cute! Thanks!

  26. Hello! approximately how big are the trees? i am going to actually use they as stand-up trees for table centerpieces at my wedding! I want to have meaningiful songs on each of them! i just want to be sure they are big enough to see! 🙂

    thanks!

  27. They are so cute! I am going to make this for my niece wedding.Thank you so much.Is there any more crafts you doing.please let me know.It so much fun to do craft. I am looking for something for baby shower.

    1. Have you seen our “Pretty In Pink” baby shower kit?? I’ve used that one for 2 showers I’ve thrown so far! XOXO

  28. I absolutely loved this project. I made one for myself, my two nieces, and my sister-in-law. I hung two additional hearts on either side of each of them due to we each have two children. For my sister-in-law, I wrote the names of her daughters and their husbands to the two additional hearts, and then, scattered on the bottom, I added her four grandchildren. It came out so cute that I was jealous that I don’t have grandchildren yet. Thank you again for the the free printables making it so easy to do.

  29. I just made this super wonderful ‘love tree’! It turned out better than could ever hope for and was super easy! I can’t thank you enough for the great links and step by step guide. Instead of using lyrics I used Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem “How do I love thee”. We quote this poem and change the words as we go. May I suggest using poems, love letters, bible verses, wedding vows, whatever touches your heart. Thanks again!! You’re the greatest!

    1. Sorry! Our site was experiencing issues. Try it again and it should work! Just right-click on the link{s} and save it to your desktop. XOXO

  30. Found you on Pinterest and had to do this for Honey and myself for Valentines – using Phil Vassar’s Just Another Day in Paradise. Thank you for the step by step, links, and files!!!! You made this absolutely much easier than doing it without all your help!

  31. Love this, and almost done! However I don’t have good handwriting at all! Do you know any way to be able to type the names onto the heart images before printing? Thanks!!

    1. Hey Kim! If you have a photoshop program, you can do it in there. If not… do you have any friends with great handwriting? That might be the perfect Plan B! Good luck! XOXO

  32. I love all the ideas you give us that are diy…… I can do most of these and my husband loves them! It will make our Valentines day oh so special since it’s our first and we are on a shoestring budget!!!!!

  33. Thank you so much for this idea. It saved me this year. So I used a clear floating frame and didn’t need to secure it because it was secured between the two pieces of glass. My printer would NOT cooperate so I cut it out with cuticle scissors and then outlined and cut it out. I thought this was best since I had to mirror the tree and I don’t own an ink company for all the mistakes I would’ve made. I also put 2mm crystals in between the song lyrics. I’m excited, I hope he loves but if not will keep for myself, Lol!!!!!

    1. Your finished product sounds AMAZING!!! I’m sure he will love it PLUS, it’s darling decor for the house!! Win-win! XOXO

  34. Thank you so much for this wonderful idea! and all the templates. wish me luck ( I am not the craftiest gal). I want to make one for my daughter and her spouse and my son and his! So excited!

  35. Ohh So cute! I just made this to give to my Fiancé for our wedding this coming Saturday. (on Valentine’s ay) It turned out just beautiful, thank you for the idea and the instructions.

  36. I made this and the lyrics wont print on the very top and bottom of the tree. I set the margins as small as it would let me. Any ideas how I could fix it?

  37. I have just come across your website today and I have to say I love it. You make things so easy to do. Thank you!

  38. I have just found your website today when on pintrest and I have to say so far I love it and this idea. You make it so easy. Thank you!!!

  39. Made this for valentines this year! Can’t wait to give it to him!! Wasn’t too hard, the hardest for me was the writing of the names to look super nice and the tree I did two takes on, used an expo marker for the smaller crevices where the ink pad didn’t fit.

  40. Hi! I tried to make this, but the tree pdf prints with a border. So the dimensions slightly less than 8 x 10. Is there something I m missing?

    1. Hey Shruti! It’s probably something to do with your printer settings. Try playing around with that before you print and see if that changes anything.

    2. I had a border print too but it seemed to work, maybe check your margins for the page setup? I had .25 for the top and bottom for the word document…I don’t recall for the PDF what it was, good luck!

  41. This is SO cute! Thank you for making it so easy:) I’m super excited to make this for Valentines. You divas rock!!

    1. Gosh – I’m not sure! So sorry! I haven’t had to clean up an area before. Maybe try google-ing it? Let me know if you figure anything out. If all else fails… it will just give it character! 😉 XOXO

  42. I love this idea and can’t wait to try it out! I have a question though. I am not familiar with “inking” so can you tell me your technique for inking the trees and heart?

    1. Rebecca – click on where I talk about distressing ink and you can see the ink I buy. You can hold it in your hand and when you rub it against the side of the paper, it leaves a fun “distressed” smear of black. LOVE it! I just keep doing it until it looks how I want it. Hope that helps! XO

  43. I absolutely love this. I am not as talented as you when it comes to the computer. What would it cost me to have it made. Do you sell them?

    1. Hey Girly! I have no clue what it would cost to make this… and we don’t sell them. So sorry! You can TOTALLY do this! Promise! All you need is Word. MWAH! XOXO

  44. any tips on how I could do this with our wedding invite instead of song lyrics? Our invite is 5×7 and printed on heavy card stock.

  45. any tips on how I could do this with our wedding invitation instead of printing out song lyrics? Our invite is 5×7 and thick card stock.

  46. This is such a beautiful idea! Easy to make, meaningful, something I can put on the wall that my husband and I can both enjoy (it’s not TOO “girly”!).

    I LOVE IT!

  47. I just finished making one for my husband. He told me yesterday that some of his favorite presents over the past few years have come from this website, so thanks for all the cute ideas!

  48. I typed up the lyrics in Word but it does not cover the entire page, so the tree has some blank space at the top and side of the tree, anyone know how to fix this?

  49. I love this a lot! I’m making it for my boyfriend for christmas.. Our song is “1,2,3,4” by Plain White T’s. I added a crescent moon in the same pattern as my tree and some solid black stars and it looks really pretty. How can i put a frame on my completed project since i used the square adhesives to make it 3D? Or what kind of frame should it be? Because I dont have any frames that would work with this project. Thanks!

  50. Hi there. I love this, thank you so much. Perfect for a dating on year anniversary. I’ve printed out the tag which is super pixelated. At first I thought it was me, but I tried two different computers. Is it possible to send me the file that’s not? Thank you so much!

  51. Thank you for this. I just gave this to my husband yesterday for out 26th anniversary. I used 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 inside my tree.

I couldn’t have found it at a better time. My husband just started a new job and hasn’t gotten a paycheck in three weeks, so this was definitely budget friendly. The card and the wrapping cost me more than the frame!…lol

    1. You are SO welcome, Leslie! I love that you put a scripture in there! What a great idea!!! We wish you and your hubby all the best. XOXO

  52. I made for our first anni using a rustic frame the color of our wedding that I bought at Michaels. I also used a light brown natural cardstock for background and twine from our wedding supplies. Then, used a punch for the hearts on some other textured scrapbook paper/cardstock and it looks so awesome. Something that really set it off was crumpling the paper for the tree to give it texture and using distressing ink. I got a ton of compliments and best of all my hubby loves it. Thnk you!

    1. Gosh, it sounds like it looks amazing! I am SO happy your hubs likes it! Thanks for sharing all of that with us! {You sound like a pretty creative gal!} XOXO

  53. Thank you for this! I just finished making it for our 5 year anniversary. I also printed a note with our date for the blank area, printed it out and placed little foamies to make it stand out like the tree. I LOVE IT!! Thanks again!

  54. Just finished making this for my husband! Our 1st anniversary is Sunday. I did mine a little different though. I ended up using the lyrics as the background and using a textured scrapbook paper for the tree on top. I skipped using the hearts and got two little bird stickers instead, putting them on the long tree branch with beaks touching 🙂 Then I drew a heart in the center of the tree with a very thin sharpie and put our anniversary date inside. Thanks sooo much for sharing this and the templates! I really enjoyed making this and can’t wait to see how my husband likes it on Sunday!

  55. Absolutely love this. Making this for my girlfriend, it’s our year anniversary on Sunday. I hope she likes it but I’m sure she will, it’s brilliant in my opinion 🙂

  56. I love this idea, have been trying to print out the song lyrics you had on here but they will only print in grey, what do I need to do to print this in black? You did a wonderful job of this and I am wanting to make this for my husband for our 48th anniversary next month so would appreciate any and all help! Thanks in advance!

    1. Oh no, Sandie! I am so sorry! They are uploaded in black…? Do you think it has something to do with your printer settings?

  57. Love this! I just finished my own frugal version, and it looks awesome! I used cream-coloured cardstock I had on hand, coloured with red marker the backs of the hearts, since I printed them in greyscale (I’m out of colour ink), used yarn from my stash, and rolls of scotch tape to make the tree and hearts stand out. I also used a sharpie to ink the edges (tip: do it with the back facing you!). I used 1 Corinthians 13 since we don’t really have a song. The overall effect is just great! Thanks so much!!

  58. I made one of these for my son and daughter-in-law’s first anniversary (Paper)–it’s just perfect! Their first dance at their reception was to “Moondance”, so those are the lyrics I printed. I can’t wait to give them this beautiful gift–thank you!

  59. I just did this for my daughter for valentine’s day, but instead of a tree, I did a moon. On the top it says “I love you to the moon and back” and we have two little hearts with her name and “mommy” hanging from the moon. I used a song that I’ve been singing to her since she was born. Once it’s framed it will be gorgeous!

  60. I just made this and it turned out very cute! Thanks for the instructions and examples. Our song has been “Two Occasions” by Babyface for the last 25 years!

  61. This is so pretty! I didn’t realize how easily it could be to make it. The “use your best handwriting part” makes me question if mine would look as nice as yours though. 😉 Thanks for posting!

    1. You crack me up! If you are worried about your handwriting, you can try to convince a friend or neighbor {who has beautiful print} to do it. Wink!

However… your handwriting might make it more meaningful! XO

  62. Love this idea! Just made this in about 10 min. Easy thanks to the tree template. I used a heart punch I acquired during my many years of scrapbooking.

  63. I’ve been wanting to do this since I got married last March (except with our vows- we wrote our own) but haven’t been able to find the perfect tree template until now! Thank you for sharing.
