Do you feel lucky in love? Want to make sure YOUR sweetheart knows how lucky you feel to have them in your life this Valentine’s Day? I’ve put together a quick, very easy tutorial of the perfect INEXPENSIVE Valentine’s Gift for your spouse.

I love scratch-off tickets. I love the anticipation as you rub that penny across the ticket waiting to see what you’ve won/earned underneath. I decided to make that the basis of my gift for my Husband this Valentine’s Day.

Start by gathering your supplies:

  • Lucky in Love cards printed on cardstock
  • Paper cutter
  • Marker/pen
  • Paint brush
  • Metallic acrylic paint
  • Dish soap
  • Contact Paper OR clear packing tape

I decided to make my Lucky in Love with one per day for him to scratch off. So I printed the page 4 times (there are 4 to a sheet and I needed at least 14.) After cutting them out, I wrote out my messages.

You could write a variety of things each day; quotes, love notes, activities/something to do each day, coupon, etc. For mine I chose to write a number on each card (1 – 14) and then something that corresponded to that number AND our relationship. So for example: 2 Beautiful Children Together AND 6 Semesters of Medical School Completed AND 5 Years of Being Married to my best friend. It definitely took some time and creativity to come up with something for each number. {And some are definitely better than others!)

Now it is time to paint! Instructions of how to make the scratch off ticket were found here but essentially it is one part dish soap added to two parts metallic acrylic paint. MY TIPS: I was originally going to get the silver metallic paint, but when I got to the store they were out. I found the bright red metallic paint and it ended up matching the cards PERFECTLY! Also, instead of using contact paper (or laminating…which some comments suggested), I just put a piece of clear packing tape on the card. It worked beautifully! So much easier then cutting out contact paper.

Give it a few hours to dry. You may need to do more then one coat of paint. I did 2 coats and it covered the pen completely, but I wrote the numbers in permanent marker and a little of that showed through.

Then string them up on the wall or put them in envelopes…whatever you want to do! Don’t forget to give your Valentine a penny to scratch the card and see your message.

This gift is sure to let any valentine know that you are lucky to have them!

  1. I did this for my boyfriend for V-day this year (Except I made my card). I found that if you put white crayon under the paint it scratches off perfectly! It works better then tape!

  2. I made these!they were wonderful and a big hit! I took it one step futher and combined the “tied to you date” found here from this site.,.. https://www.thedatingdivas.com/holidays/valentines-day/tied-to-you/ and at the end I had 14 heart shaped balloons with the Lucky in love scratches tied to them! My husband was very impressed and best of all surprised and excited. I think he will talk about this one for a while. Thanks ladies! I am new to your site and your ideas are great! I can’t wait to see what you come up with next! here is some pics of what it looked like.. hey it’s g rated…lol https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150676065944188&set=a.45806809187.70398.740174187&type=1&theater and this one https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150676058009188&set=a.45806809187.70398.740174187&type=1&theater

  3. Love, love, love this idea. My kids have enjoyed “helping” Daddy scratch the tickets so much we used this idea to make their school cards this year. After making a total of over 50 cards I found it easier to contact paper the entire page at once. Don’t worry about cutting the contact paper straight and it is ok if it goes over the edge a little. It all comes out perfect when you cut out the individual squares and it make the card stock a little more durable. We also used publisher to create the cards so they didn’t have to hand write all those messages… FUN and SUPER CUTE! Thanks for the idea!

  4. Made these yesterday and blogged about them. Thanks so much for the template and the packing tape suggestion, that made it so easy!

  5. This is a great idea and I implemented it for my husband this February, with a twist of my own. I created three boxes with something special hidden underneath each one – each day, for 14 days this month, he get’s to scratch off one box from one card to reveal his special treat! Photos here: https://cottonwoodwhispers.com/wp/?p=909 if you’re interested! THANK YOU for the absolutely WONDERFUL idea! I can see this incorporated for birthdays and anniversaries too!

  6. I just finished painting the scratch off potion on the cards. How long did it take to dry? I’m worried now that mine might be too watery :S

    1. Mine took about an hour or so to dry?! I let them sit out on the table for an afternoon so they were good a dry. I hope yours worked out!

  7. These are so cute! Love the idea for my husband but what about changing the wording and using them for kids Valentine’s at school. They would go nuts for this!

    1. I completely agree. If I was a super cool Mom, I’d even make my kids chores on these and let it be a mystery each week to what chores they had to do!!!

  8. SUCH a cuuuuuuuuute idea! I am in LOVE with this, Erika! Seriously! One of my fav’s you’ve done…..and you’ve done a lot I love! 🙂

  9. Thank you so very much, Erika! Definitely going to work on those this week! My husband is only in his 2nd semester of medical school so we’ve still got a ways to go:)

  10. Such a cute idea! You are my FAVORITE Dating Diva!!! I love all of your posts, so creative! Thank you so much for sharing!

  11. Love love this idea! def. heading to the store this weekend to get the supplies. Thank you for another awesome idea.

PS. I am sooo jealous of the 6 semesters of med school completed. My husband is in his first year so he just started semester 2. Where does you husband go to school at. Gosh I can’t wait to be where you are… 6 semesters down!

    1. I hope yours turns out just like you want! We are at school in Iowa, and I’m SO glad we are as far as we are. That first and second year are horrible!!! You’ll make it through, and then 3rd year (and I hear 4th) are so much better. Best of luck to you and your husband!
