What do I do as a host?

When you get the Killer 80’s Prom, you’ll get your own Host Guide app that has absolutely EVERYTHING you need to pull off the perfect prom night.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s included in your Host Guide app:

  • Directions for how to assign all the characters to each of your invited guests (This particular mystery is perfect for 20 people/10 couples, but can be done with as few as 14 people/7 couples, or as many additional characters as you’d like)
  • A generic digital invite that you can send to all of your guests
  • 20 character-specific digital invites that can be sent to each guest, informing them of their character’s personality and look, so that they can arrive totally prepared!
  • Step-by-step directions for what needs to be prepared the night of the party (Hint: it’s not that much! Easiest hosting gig ever!)
  • Party decoration ideas, including direct links to the RADDEST prom decor out there!
  • Food suggestions to keep things simple yet on-theme (I mean, you’ve GOTTA have a punch bowl, right?!)
  • A party timeline so that you can get a feel for how the evening will be organized. But don’t worry, you still aren’t getting any extra info that will ruin the mystery of the night!
  • Prom music playlist (DUH!)

You’ll have access to all 20 character’s QR codes that will take them directly to their individualized app for the evening. You’ll want each guest to scan their own QR code as they walk into the prom! (Plus, YOU will be assigned one of the characters, too! Just don’t scan your own code until the party starts for the ultimate surprise!)

While you’ve got a bit of character-assigning and inviting ahead of you, there’s not much else needed to pull off this killer party!

Easiest. Hosting. Gig. Ever.

What will my guests experience?

When you plan your 80’s Killer Prom party, you’ll need to think of your guest list!

This party is designed for 20 players, and each player is in a “couple” with another character, making it the perfect group date!

Here’s a quick rundown of all the characters that will show up at your prom:

  • Principal Hyde – the germaphobe Principal who despises teens
  • Vice-Principal Huish – the VP who tries a little too awkwardly to fit in with the kids
  • Ronald Reboot – the Senior Class President bound for the White House
  • Melissa Mooney – the prom committee member who hears wedding bells in her future
  • Willy Waves – the class clown whose focus is always on the next prank
  • Kelly Klinger – the fashionista who is anything but camera shy
  • Coach Armstrong – the school’s football coach who constantly relives his glory days
  • Ursula Upstage – the dramatic theatre teacher who is passionate about the arts
  • Todd Tooshoe – the goodie goodie student who is as preppy and privileged as they come
  • Amy Achiever – the school’s most scholastic student and likely to be the valedictorian
  • Scott Scour – the clumsy custodian who can’t seem to remember his keys
  • Ms. Saysso – the rule-enforcing government teacher who is focusing on educating the future generation
  • Chad Catching – the school jock, and a football star with a promising future
  • Becca Brite – the bubble gum smacking cheerleader who is full of spirit
  • Christopher Cannon – the school’s lead journalist who is always looking for their next story
  • Lisa LeFame – the thespian who seeks the spotlight in every situation
  • Jason JuJealous – the new kid with a dark past
  • Chanel Frenchè – the French foreign exchange student whose thick accent attracts all the boys
  • Craig Clash – the breakdancing b-boy who loves to drop a strong DJ beat
  • Dawn Dissonance – the toe-tapping band geek

Note: If 20 people/10 couples (including yourself!) is not feasible, this party CAN be done with as few as 14 people/7 couples. When you get your Host Guide app, you’ll see the directions for how to do this.

Another note: If you have MORE than 20 people/10 couples you’d like to invite as guests, we’ve come up with a simple solution to add on as many additional people as you’d like. They’ll even get their own character app, too!

Funny characters for each of your party guests

Once you’ve planned out your killer guest list, you’ll send each guest a generic digital invitation, also included in your Host Guide app. These are SO easy to text out, and totally awesome!

Getting RSVP’s is a MUST for this kind of party! As soon as you hear back that each guest will be attending, send them their unique character’s invitation so that they know who they will be, and how they can dress and act!

Guests (including YOU as the host) won’t know anything about the dramatic story that will unfold during the party until they actually arrive, all blinged out and hair sprayed up. But these invites are crucial in letting your guests prepare how they will dress and act for the night!

The night of the big Prom, you’ll have each guest scan their own unique QR code (found in your Host Guide app!) as they arrive.

Their QR code will take them to their very own Killer 80’s Prom app for the evening! Each guest will save it to their home screen and spend some time reading to get the latest scoop on all the gossip they know.

And from then on, the app will walk everyone through what to do for the evening! There will be lots of time for mingling amongst guests as you swap stories and stir up a little trouble… okay, okay, I don’t want to give too much away for how the evening will unfold! Just know that everyone is going to have a BLAST doing their own thing.

The party should last around 2 hours in total.

I’m ready to party like it’s 1985!

Say goodbye to the scissors and the hours of organization, and say hello to the NEW, simple way to pull off the most complicated kind of party.

All of your guests will have a BLAST with the throwback 80’s theme, and you will get to enjoy participating in the party without having any of it spoiled beforehand!

It’s as simple as you downloading your Host Guide app, inviting all your totally tubular guests, and making sure they scan their own QR code as the party begins! Download. Invite. Scan. That’s it!

How much does this cost?

For a full evening of dramatic and creative face-to-face fun, murder mystery parties can cost up to $60 (or more!) for a kit where you either have to do all the printing and prepping, OR you have to wait for a large package to be shipped to your door.

We wanted to make a simpler and cheaper way.

Our completely all-inclusive 80’s Killer Prom party, with your detailed Host Guide app and then 20 additional character-specific apps is only $45! (That’s $4.50 per couple for an evening they will never forget!)

  1. I have a question about your 80’s Prom Murder Mystery-

    1. Does this require exactly 20 people or can you roll with a few less?

    2. Does this require really out-going individuals to play the parts or can average people play the game with success?

    Thanks, Scott Eyster

    1. Thanks for reaching out! You can do the 80’s Prom Murder Mystery with less people. In fact, the instructions let you know which characters are essential and which ones you can do without but still maintain the overall storyline. Everything you need to play, including things to say are included. You can absolutely play this with average people – they do not have to be outgoing to be successful! 🙂 You may find that people will begin to warm up to their characters as the storyline continues and they feel more comfortable. That’s totally normal!
It will be SO fun, I’m sure that everyone will have a great time!
If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us at divas@thedatingdivas.com! We have an amazing customer service team that will be standing by to help!

  2. Are there other murder mystery packages ? This was so much fun would love to try another !

  3. Hello! I’m considering this package, wanting to see reviews of people who have done it. Or is there a preview I can see somehow? Don’t want cheesy, but also don’t want too complicated. Thank you.

  4. We have a couple who may not be able to make the party therefore they should not be key characters. Is there a way to send them an invite but make sure they are not key characters?

    1. Absolutely! The characters are listed in most necessary order. You can assign your friends characters from the bottom of the list. Or, for a guarantee you can assign them to be a chaperone character or teacher. Those are fun characters with tasks, but are not key characters.
We hope you enjoy your experience!

  5. Hi, I love this idea! It sounds like a great way to be able to play as a host without any spoilers while also saving lots of preparation time. However, I’d like to know if there is anywhere that I can read reviews from people that already used it. Thanks in advance!

    1. Here are two reviews for you (just a heads up though, we’ll be having a Murder Mystery Bundle sale on Oct 12th) …

“Thank you so much for creating such a fun murder mystery party. We just hosted the 80’s prom murder mystery party last night and it was a HUGE hit. Our guests enjoyed the party and the format required little work from us (the hosts) and we were able to be a part of the script not knowing the outcome. The phone/app format was easy to use and all of us old folks had no problem using the app.” – Kristine

“We had such a great time with our 80s prom! Everyone went all out with their characters, from thrift store finds, mullet wigs, to some even buying brand new outfits for it! Some people were even a little hesitant beforehand about how they were going to portray their character, but let me tell you…once the party started there was zero hesitancy from anyone! We had 2 balloon arches to help with the decor. And hung neon streamers everywhere. We even turned our beloved Golden Retriever into the school mascot! We used the links on the app to buy the recommended party items such a the detective kit. Even though we had name tags, we used a Polaroid to take pictures of everyone once they arrived and turned it into a reference board to everyone continued to use throughout the party. Through using the App we saved SO MUCH PAPER. The only items we printed were the list of characters, introduction and the QR codes. Even though I was the host, I had no idea how the story line was going to play out. Along with all the guest, I too was shocked by several turn of events! Thanks for putting together such a great, fun, and affordable game/app that more than 20 of us were able to use!” – Anonymous

      1. Hi, thank you so much, this was very helpful. I can’t wait to try it! This is the second murder mystery party that I organize, but the first time I didn’t get to play… and it’s not the same. Can I ask if the bundle sale will include this + another murder mystery in the same format? If so, what is the theme? The party is the 15th, so i don’t know if the 12th is too close to wait until then.

        1. The bundle will include our 3 different murder mysteries. 1. This 80’s Prom- all in app form. 2. A 1920’s themed red carpet soiree. (For that one, you’ll need to print out the materials included.) 3. Our “Whodunit” clue detective game- you can play this one over and over and the result is different every time. (You also need to print the materials for that one.)

    1. Each guest has an important role to play in the storyline, so to go without a character may leave a slight hole in the story. However, it is definitely still possible to play with fewer characters. We suggest a minimum of 7 couples and have provided suggestions for accommodation in the Host Guide.

  6. Hi! Do the character descriptions and apps give every detail their character needs during the mingling process? For example, do the players need to come up with their own questions to ask others or will the questions and answers be scripted? I attended a murder mystery dinner party where we got a small character info sheet and we had to come up with all the conversation and no one knew how to answer people when they were interrogating them. We didn’t really gather any insight on who the killer could be because we made up our own questions and answers. I hope that makes sense. 🙂

    1. Definitely makes sense! There are specific prompts like “Blow your whistle and yell ‘Interference!’ if you see anything sketchy happening” or “Shoot dirty looks at Ronald if he talks about college” Each scripted character has a backstory and specific tasks for each round.

  7. Hi, I’m hoping to do this as a birthday party with my sports club, there will possibly be 30people attending. Can I assign the 10 extra characters to the additional guests prior to the night?

    1. Yes, you can! They will have the option of choosing their own type of identity and will have basic instructions as well. Have a TUBULAR time! 😉

  8. I purchased this and I am so excited to do it! Can we include single friends or does everyone need to be paired up?

  9. Is this something where it would be fun to do more than once? or is the storyline/killer the same so if we were to host different parties we would already know the storyline and what to expect/the ending?

I would love to do this with some extended family but would also love to have a couples date night! wondering if it’s feasible

        1. For our “who dunit game” there is no limit! So you could totally do it with 50 people. And our prom murder mystery game includes 20 characters but additional character templates that your guests can customize to create additional characters. Both additional character templates include specific clues, objectives, and tasks to complete just as the other characters do. These additional guests can use our template to create their own character name, their role in the story, and even a fun character quirk unique to them.

        2. I usually throw a murder mystery party every year for about 20-25 couples and it’s always a hit. I was searching for my next storyline and wanted to do something different and this seems like so much fun! On a scale of 1-10, how hard would you rate this mystery? I usually do 7 or 8 out of ten and have about a handful who figure it out.

          1. When I put it on I had a small cast (only 7 couples) and no one figured it out before the ending! It’s set up in a way that you as the host will also be able to fully play and be surprised as well. With that many people involved, there are a lot of directions it could go.

  10. I’d like to get this for my daughter for her to use with her friends. She recently had to move home Fter 5 years in California. Since it is sent to my phone how would I do this?

    1. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you have access to it forever! And maybe someday we will do other themes, but as of now just the 80’s prom! 🙂

    1. Yes! There are no nefarious affairs. A couple of times the notes allude to the couples using the janitor’s closet as a secret rendevous location, but they are not asked to go in there and kiss or anything.
