What Are Love Languages?

According to Dr. Gary Chapman, there are five love languages. These love language types determine how we best receive love. The five languages are:

  1. Words of affirmation
  2. Quality time
  3. Physical touch
  4. Receiving gifts
  5. Acts of service

You and your spouse may have different love language types. If you don’t know what your love language is, don’t worry! It’s easy to figure out. Here is a quiz that will help you get started on your journey to understanding each other’s love language.

Gift Ideas for the Words of Affirmation Spouse

Valentine's Day is the perfect day to spoil your spouse through their love language. | The Dating Divas
Writing letters goes a long way for spouses with the words of affirmation love language.

While words of affirmation may seem like the easiest love language, it’s actually not. You’d think that saying “I love you” would be enough, but sometimes words of affirmation spouses (including this Diva!) need a little more. Here are five romantic ideas that will make those words of affirmation spouses feel oh-so-special this Valentine’s Day.

  • Write a song, letter, or poem about the love you have for your spouse. Even better, include specific details like what you love about your spouse, what you appreciate about them, your favorite thing about their personality, etc.
  • Write sweet love notes onto pink or red sticky notes, and then arrange the sticky notes in the shape of a heart on their mirror.
  • Starting now, keep a gratitude journal of the things you are grateful for about your spouse, and do your best to write 5-10 things in it daily. If possible, make each item on the list different and specific. For example, “I’m grateful that you took care of the grocery shopping today,” or “I’m grateful that you cooked a delicious dinner tonight.” By Valentine’s Day, you will have over a month’s worth of gratitude for your spouse to read!
  • Write a bunch of “letters for” or “open when” letters for your spouse. Gift all the letters to them on Valentine’s Day, and tell them to open the letters whenever the need arises. Depending on how many letters you write, this is a gift that they can enjoy all year long!
  • Create a sweet video using VidDay. Simply send an invitation to contribute to the video to those who love your spouse, or the video can just include you! Once everyone records a small video, it’ll upload into the final product for your sweetie. You can customize it with music, a theme, and text cards! No complicated editing is required.

A woman is receiving gifts as her love language.

The spouses who prefer to receive gifts as a form of love may seem tricky to shop for, and sometimes they can be. We’ve done our best to find meaningful gifts that nearly every gift-receiver will love, husband or wife!

  • A personalized date necklace. This necklace can have any important date stamped onto it. Some examples include the day you both met, the day you got engaged, the date of your wedding, the date you became parents, etc. Basically, you can use any meaningful date that you and your spouse want to remember! For the men, check out these personalized date key chains.
  • Flowers. Yes, we did say you could skip the flowers and chocolates this year, but sometimes that’s what is preferred, and that’s okay! We have a list of 15 of the BEST flower companies that you can use for Valentine’s Day (or any day of the year!). You can make the flowers even more meaningful by choosing your spouse’s favorite flower, writing a sweet note or poem, or pairing the flowers with a romantic date night.
  • A custom star map print. These star maps are so cool! You can personalize each map with both of your names and a significant date in your relationship (the day you met, got engaged, got married, etc.). The print will then be an exact replica of what the sky looked like that night. How romantic?!
  • A custom faceless portrait of you and your valentine. These are so trendy right now! Each print would look great as an art piece in your home.

Gift Ideas for the Acts of Service Spouse

A woman performing acts of service to fulfill her partner’s love language.

Contrary to popular belief, spouses who receive love through acts of service don’t necessarily need grand acts performed. Something as simple as taking out the trash or even making the bed in the morning helps! However, gifting an act of service might seem a little harder to pull off. That’s why we’ve come up with five simple yet romantic ways to fill your sweetie’s love tank through acts of service!

  • A customizable coupon book that you can fill with different acts of service to perform for your spouse. Here are a few ideas: taking out the trash, filling an empty gas tank, mowing the lawn, folding the laundry, making the bed, dusting the house, and cooking dinner.
  • Breakfast in bed, complete with a breakfast tray. In 2024, Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday, so if breakfast in bed doesn’t work due to work schedules, consider postponing until the weekend. Or you can have comfy clothes/pajamas, a few movies, maybe some books, your spouse’s favorite drink, and a snack ready for when your spouse gets home from work (or when you get home from work if your spouse is already at home). You can then tell your spouse to hop into bed to relax, and you can bring them dinner in bed!
  • Wake up a little earlier on Valentine’s Day and take over some of your spouse’s daily load of tasks before you head to work or before your spouse leaves for work. You can set out their clothes for the day, pack a lunch, get a slow cooker dinner going, or start warming up/cooling down their car.
  • Allow your spouse to take some “Me Time” while you take on some of their daily routine.
  • Gift your spouse a monthly cleaning service, car wash membership, or even a grocery subscription like HelloFresh or Blue Apron. There are so many different subscriptions/services that can easily replace some of your spouse’s daily tasks and make their life a lot easier!

We certainly hope this list of love language gift ideas helps you plan an unforgettable Valentine’s Day for your spouse and lets them know just how much you adore them!

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Divas!
